What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy recognises that many aches and pains arise as a result of structural abnormalities in the body. For example, a tight hamstring might lead to a twist in the lower spine, which could produce a strain in the neck, resulting in headaches.
It isn't enough just to treat the headache - you have to get to the root cause or the problem will keep coming back!
Osteopaths undergo up to 5 years' medical training to learn to identify and treat these problems. All osteopaths must be registered with the General Osteopathic Council, thus ensuring that they are safe, competent and up-to-date.
Osteopathy is recognised as a discrete medical discipline by the British Medical Association and was the first complementary healthcare profession to be granted statutory recognition under an Act of Parliament.
What do Osteopaths Treat?
Most people probably associate osteopaths with the treatment of back pain, but this is just one of many conditions which often respond well to osteopathy. The list above gives just a few examples of areas where we can help.
The Consultation
On your first visit to an osteopath, a full case history will be taken, covering all aspects of your health. You will normally be asked to undress to your underwear so that the osteopath can conduct a physical examination, which will include a few simple movements. Once a diagnosis has been reached and your osteopath is satisfied that it is safe to treat you, a variety of methods may be used to address problem areas. These may include a range of muscle stretching or joint manipulation techniques, but your osteopath will talk you through the procedure in advance to ensure you are happy with the treatment programme.
The Practitioners
All our practitioners are highly trained and experienced osteopaths, registered with the General Osteopathic Council. At the Ashgrove Clinic, we are all great believers in the "multidisciplinary approach" - thus whenever we feel that another osteopath, or an alternative therapist, may be able to contribute, we cross-refer to achieve the best result for you, the patient.
